MTLE Special Education Core Skills (Birth to Age 21) Subtest II (186) Practice

When a student’s home language isn’t English, language barriers can mask true abilities on evaluations. Providing a translator during the assessment helps ensure the student understands each item as it’s intended and can respond based on knowledge and skills rather than language proficiency alone. This directly reduces language bias, supporting fair and valid results.

Other strategies don’t address the root issue of language access as effectively. Speaking more slowly might aid comprehension slightly, but it doesn’t ensure accurate understanding of the content or maintain the test’s standard administration. Shortening the test changes the measurement length and can undermine reliability. Modifying questions with simpler language alters what’s being measured, affecting the validity of the results. A translator preserves the test’s content while mitigating language barriers, which is why it’s the best-fit accommodation for unbiased results.
